Men’s Basketball Falls to Crown in Regional Semifinal
DUBUQUE, Iowa—The Faith Eagles faced a tall task Friday night (literally and figuratively) in the semifinal round of the NCCAA Division II North Region Tournament as they took on the top team in the nation in the coaches' poll and the number two seed in the region, the Crown Polars. In the end, Crown's size and talent were too much to overcome as Faith fell, 83-52.
On paper, the matchup looked daunting, as Faith faced not only the nation's top team, but also a team with much more height, particularly with Crown's second-leading scorer, Seth Royston, a 6'8" stretch forward, and its leading scorer, Cade Carroll, an athletic 6'5" wing. Royston was a handful all night for the Eagles as he finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks, and also eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his career during the game.
Not only was Crown's size a challenge on the defensive end, it was perhaps an even bigger challenge on the offensive end for Faith. The Polars smothered Faith's offense, holding the Eagles to just 15 points in the first half. The Eagles managed just four points in the final 13 minutes of the first half, essentially sealing their fate as they trailed by 24 at the break.
The offense found some life in the second half, but a rally was not in the cards as the game never got close after halftime. Chris Barnette finished the final game of his career with 20 points to lead the way for Faith. Jayce Goergen was the only other player in double figures with 11 in the final game of his career.
With the loss, the Eagles finished their season win 17 wins and 14 losses. Next season will look much different as Coach Fincham will need to replace three-to-four of his leading scorers as the Eagles retool coming off a fantastic season.
