Eagles Championship Hopes Stay Alive With Draw Against Pensacola
Kissimmee, FL -- The Eagles earned one more point and stayed out of elimination in their 1-1 draw against the Eagles from Pensacola Christian College.
The comeback kids did it again, fighting to another draw in their second pool play match. The opposing Eagles from Pensacola were sure to be a challenge, as they sat in the top two spots of the coaches poll all season. Faith approached the game with a more defensive mindset, strategically choosing when to make offensive pushes. While Pensacola outshot the Eagles 25-7, Faith put three shots on goal to their opponents' four, nearly matching the offensive output. Neither team found a breakthrough until Pensacola was awarded a PK following a hand ball in the box. With less than one minute to go in the first half, Pensacola landed their PK and took the 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half began to the tune of a SpaceX launch lighting the sky orange in the distance. Less than 30 second in Cody Clark found himself in the midfield with the ball and no defenders in sight, and launched a shot from deep outside the box that soared over the keeper's reach and into the net to tie the match at one goal apiece. The Eagles had a chance to score moments later but could not convert on their run. From there, both teams picked up the intensity and battled for the remaining 44 minutes. Pensacola placed one more shot on goal in the second half, but Zeke Denger earned his third and final save of the day with the easy scoop. The teams played out the remainder of the match without a score and ended in a 1-1 draw.
With two points in pool play so far, Faith sits at third in Pool B and still within reach of the National Championship match. Thursday's scenarios are as follows:
Loss: Faith would finish with 2 points and be eliminated from the championship match
Tie: Faith would finish with 3 points and be eliminated from the championship match
Win: Faith would finish with 5 points and their fate would be determined by the Alice Lloyd/Pensacola match (PCC would need to lose or tie, and Faith would need to have a higher goal differential if tied).
